Heysham Lodge on Heysham Head was built in 1816 as a private residence by George Wright (one time steward for John Marsden at Hornby Castle). It is now again a private residence but to anyone coming on holiday to this area in the mid 20th century it was an amusement arcade, cafe, or night club within Heysham Head Pleasure Gardens (1926-1964) or Heysham Head Entertainment Centre (1967-1983). Septimus Wray opened Heysham head Pleasure Gardens in 1926 - as well as a rose garden, there was a circus, puppet shows, outdoor dancing, playgound and cafe. In the 1930s these were huge attractions for families coming on train and coach trips from the mill towns of East Lancashire. In 1936 Septimus Wray died and his sons Fred and Norman took over the management. |

In 1956 Jan & Vlasta Dalibor provided the puppet show. They created Pinky & Perky, two puppet pigs that became popular children’s television characters. Vlasta and her husband had fled Czechoslovakia when communism was imposed after the war and arrived in England with only the clothes on their backs. Jan had modelling skills and Vlasta persuaded him to make two pig puppets - pigs were a token of good luck in Czechoslovakia. One of their first engagements was a summer season in Heysham at Heysham Head and they were then signed up by the BBC after they were spotted there. They came to television and became popular with both children and adults with their slot just before the six o'clock news. |
